This looks really exciting. How ever a have a couple of questions if i may?

I was reading terms and conditions. And was wondering? To be a valid submission we can only use muvizu? Does this mean that I'm not allowed to use after effects for any post render fx's. For example, Like I did in "spacey" for the scroll, the flames and screen rotation?

thx

I believe that is the case - if you are the winner we would be looking to use your .set file to create a High-Resolution version of your video to display on a big screen but if you have used any after effects then we wouldn't be able to recreate your video.

I will double check and get back to you later.

Surely this should be fine?

as long as muvizu is the main bulk of the work........but any extras should defo be allowed. From this logic that would mean no photoshop for images, no audacity to re-work audio etc.....

in terms of outputting large, then maybe this should be in the guidelines instead, so that any output from the entries can be used?

Items imported in muvizu (i.e. Photoshop images and audio would be contained with in the .set) But, IF you wanted to say add credits at the end muvizu currently has no "easy" way of doing this. So it would have to be rendered via muvizu then, brought in to after effects to have them added. Doing so though brings about the paradox. Becuase now these additions are not included in the .set. However IF they would be willing to accept the .set and AE work file they could pretty much render the movie any size they choose. I mean To my knowledge muvizu only has a maximum output of 720p anyways So if they wanted it any bigger they would have to use another program anyways. Includung the AE work file if it would be accepted would could in fact be helpful as the prerender would already be done for them. Anyways I'm currently scripting my entry for the festival. So i'm just trying to work out the details as what i can include.

Last point, And ill hush..... IF in fact you or I use the muvizu joiner to join together many different renderings to mke a single clip. I myself use after effects to join them. No offense to the joiner I'm sure it works fine but AE allows for much smoother transitions between the clips. With out the uses of AE tho you will still be left not with a single .Set but "many"

The folk running the Raindance contest weren't in today so I wasn't able to get an answer - they should be in tommorrow.

If it is the case that we can only accept content with a .set file you could get your credits in by projecting a video that contains your credits onto a backdrop and then record it. Not ideal, but the only way of having credits in a .set file that I can think of.

Morning,

I have just double checked with those running the competition- it's as we thought:

No after effects so we are able to create a high-res version for cinema screens, which we can do in a development version of Muvizu. (720p may look good on your monitor or TV but Cinemas require resolutions higher than 1080p)

The reason that the high-res output has been disabled for the public releases is because it's pretty unstable and very, very resource intensive.

You can submit multiple .set files if you wish to have more than 4 camera cuts.

Any audio, images or video imported into a set are saved along with the rest of the content, so they are transferred inside the .set files that you send to us.

Any other questions just ask, and best of luck for the contest.
-Jim.

This quote from a news item posted on August 10 should help:

"You may use image programs, post-processing programs, audio programs and the like to make your 90-second clips. One of the nice things about Muvizu is that it lets us bring together pictures, dialogue, music and even videos to incorporate in our Muvizu creations.

"Use whatever tools you like, but bear in mind that we're interested in competition entries that show the best use of Muvizu as a filmmaking and animation package, so the more your clip showcases what our software can do, the better your chances of winning some state-of-the-art computing kit, as provided by Workstation Specialists."

There had been some initial confusion about this but I can assure you that you may use other programs, keeping a wary eye on the objective that I've flagged up in bold.

Oh yes, one more thing: It's likely that a news item will be posted on this site on Monday (August 30) to notify entrants that the competition deadline has been pushed to early October. It was something of a gaffe to set an August 31 cut-off when tools of particular interest to filmmakers - moving cameras, tracking shots, panning, crane etc - are released in our update of, er, August 31.

It's interesting to see how may entrants submit multiple clips. I expect we'll see even more of that now :-)
