haha flying duck muck syndrome

I am also what i call "a button pusher" and have always been that way I must take things appart or push all the buttons just to see what it will do and how it works. Regular bump maps I found its true do not work in muvizu they recognize normal maps but not bump maps I actually was playing with bump maps the other night but when I look at the wiki in fact they do not name bump maps as usable although in many cases they are interchangable with normal maps in some engines in the case of the unreal engine and muvizu the case seems to be no

I havent noticed the rest though it does for me seem to work but I haven't spent a lot of time on actual set building right now yet I am still in the modelling stage of my next blockbuster and have been taking more time then needed to build overly detailed items just because it pleases me

anyhow it looks good so far dylly there are going to be some idiosyncracies i am sure but in the end the added map layers bring a whole new level of awesome to sets and objects

I have to admit it...I'm one of life's tinkerers! I cannot resist the opportunity to 'see what happens if I just'...the possibility of being left somewhere that contained a shiny red button being one of the many reasons that I never went into politics...that and I'm useless at fiddling expenses.

So with a few hours to kill, I've been fiddling with textures and FBX. I noticed there was a slight problem with objects that had a standard material and a bump map applied to them whenever I turned on realistic shadows in Muvizu. Call it what you like, but I'm calling it 'flying dog muck syndrome', where the combination of texture, normal map and specular levels play havoc with the material in Muvizu turning it a sort of sun dried 'doings' colour.

I also noticed that FBX files are powerful beasties and models with realistic textures applied to them...sort of seemed out of context with the style of the characters. With this in mind I've been looking at toning down and 'tooning' up my textures, so a total repaint of the current scene I'm working on was called for applying some hand painted textures as well as making new bump maps, specular maps and fiddling with the gloss and reflection levels in 3ds Max before import into Muvizu. One thing that I learned is to avoid generated specular and diffuse textures like the plague and hand paint the lot, takes a bit more time but I think it makes an improvement in the finished set and models.

Below is the current scene I'm working on with new 'toon textures', complete with two versions of the same stool...excuse the pun...model. The one to the left with 'FDM' Syndrome and the one to the right the corrected version.

I haven't tried emissive yet been busy playing with the shinies metal stuffs. Its a much better format however less forgiving on integrity of the model but there is a lot more control off everything its something we needed and so I am glad they added it. I might try to make a few lights etc next week or so

anyhow glad your figuring it out
