The problem is that creating software is much more like giving birth than "manufacturing" something. You have to nurture your creation and help it grow until it reaches maturity. If you neglect this aspect it wastes away and dies young.

I think perhaps you misunderstand the nature of the software. It's not a matter of 'dead' it's a matter of 'done' - as in the developers accomplished what they set out to do, which is re-purpose a video game development tool into something people like me and you can use to create animations.

The technology it uses, The Unreal Engine, is owned by Epic Games and you can get your own license to use it as you wish. I can't imagine it being easy. As far as creating new characters, that would likely involve using heavy duty programs like 3-D studio max, which are extremely difficult to learn, and cumbersome to use without a $500 + video card. I've tried learning 'easier' 3-D programs like Poser, and was lost from the get-go.

I had someone make me a trio of virtual sets in 3-D Max and it cost real money, and they were between jobs and gave me a super good rate. Now they are back working for a video game company making much-much more than I could afford to pay. The sets they made were pretty straightforward BTW with a lot of the objects - garbage cans, cars, dumpsters, hydrants, etc. - obtained for free. I'd hate to see what they would charge to create something like a new character from scratch!

I think the best strategy is to see what you can do with the assets on hand, I have only recently started myself and it will probably take months before I run out of things to learn.

I have a commercial license for Muvizu and would LOVE to use it on our latest project. There are two features that, if they were available, would make this our go-to tool for animation.
1. Skelital FBX import. (with eyebrows/facial expressions!)
2. FBX animation import (for mocap, Perception Neuron)

I'm sure this is not trivial to do, but with these feature I believe Muvizu could, in its current form, go untouched for a while and provide tons of value. It would also give Muvizu a revenue opportunity by selling characters and animation packs (Daz3D business model).
I thought these were the features they were working on last Spring when many of us thought "Muvizu Pro" was coming out. Instead they released RenderDM. Unfortunately, that product relies on either keyframe animation (tedious) or imports from other products (Maya, 3DS Max)($$$!).
I understand they were targeting a different audience in order to put a business model together, but I think that the two features (mentioned above) added to Muvizu would be enough to get people to pay a lot for a "Pro" version. I know we've spent close to $1000 lately trying to find good software but have not been successful. I would have been happy to spend half that on a Muvizu Pro with the FBX import features; all other Muvizu features remaining the same.
I'm posting this in the hopes that Muvizu will read this and work on these features. I'm not sure if others agree with me, but I see these as killer features that would elevate Muvizu to another level while still retaining its ease-of-use and rapid production process.

Thanks
JM

Waves! Happy 2015 Muvizuers. Welcome aboard Matt!

We do realise there have been some frustrating delays recently.
Muvizu really isn't 'all but dead' and is, I hope most of you will agree is still giving many people a whole lot of pleasure.

It's only natural a few folks will aspire to do things beyond the current capabilities of any programme and we do share and really appreciate your ambition for Muvizu.

As soon as we're able to share more with you we will - promise.

PS.
Do keep sharing examples of your best work in the gallery.
edited by Carole on 08/01/2015

Hello Kapstheory.

Muvizu allows me to fulfill my movie making desires. I could have swapped to something else a couple of years ago but there's still nothing out there which will give me the results I want so quickly.

Are the couple of bugs annoying? - oh yes

Is the lack of new actions challenging? - yes

Have there been any significant developments for a couple of years? - no

Has the direction of the product over the last 4 years been, well, bewildering? - yes

However I am still really enjoying using the software are production continues.
So stick in there - the software wasn't that much money and it will be just one tool you will need as your skills grow.

They may revive the project, but you're better off thinking that it's over.

Berty

Hello All,

My name is Matt, and long long have I wanted to make animated movies/shorts, yet I've zero animation, drawing ability. Imagine my surprise, and joy when I came across this program! I have a few concerns I'd like to address quickly:

1. Is this software dead? I mean is it no longer in development? I'd hate for that to be the case as I slapped down some gard earned cash, and find it to be a great fit for my needs!
2. More Characters! Is there any plans for more characters? Or at least a way to make and import our own?

I look forward to all I can do with this software and I hope the community and project stays alive!

Thanks,
Matt
