This year Muvizu has journeyed to Stuttgart, Germany to take part in the FMX 2013, the Film and Media Exchange conference on Animation, Effects, Games and Transmedia. FMX is held in Stuttgart, Germany between April 23rd and April 26th. The week long event was founded in 1994 as the "Film and Media Exchange" and has been ran annually since 1996. This years event has taken the slogan "Lean, Smart and Agile" - something we felt Muvizu fitted in to perfectly. Today at 9am UK (BST) time, Digimania MD Barry Sheridan will be giving a 1 hour workshop on all things Muvizu but don't worry if you can't make it to Stuttgart in time as the whole presentation will be live streamed online and viewable right here at Muvizu.com.

Announcing Muvizu:Play

Hello!

Today we’re blushingly proud to announce the arrival of Muvizu:Play and, with it, a whole raft of improvements to our revolutionary animation software.

Where do we start?

With the announcement that Muvizu:Play is still free, easy to use and a great tool with which to make animation. But, we’ve been listening to you and watching other Muvizu users as their ambitions with the software have grown.

So, what’s changed? All this:
Amazing watermark-free videos and business use
Let’s start with our watermark and commercial terms. Over the years we’ve received thousands of applications from businesses and individuals who want to remove the Muvizu watermark and earn money from their videos. So, Muvizu:Play now lets you do both. With an easy, in-app purchase you are now able to render watermark-free videos which you can exploit commercially.
Simplified commerical terms
Our commercial terms - which you told us were limiting and confusing have been completely rewritten in line with the growing ambitions of our userbase. You can read our new Terms and FAQ sections for more details.
Improved website
Look, we’ve got a new website! The community, site and focus of Muvizu.com has grown and changed over the years and we’ve been paying attention. The new site has been improved for first-time visitors and existing members.

For newbies we’ve simplified the website, promoted the help section and done a better job of answering the question, ‘What is Muvizu?’

For our respected veterans we’ve made your videos larger and easier to share. We’ve introduced playlists, revisited our ‘Staff-Picks’ category and improved the Content Pack section. The website is also (buzzword alert) ‘responsive’ which means it’ll work well on mobile devices.
Better user interface
Eagle-eyed users will spot several significant improvements to Muvizu:Play’s user interface. The truth is that the whole UI has been completely rewritten. You lucky devils now have resizable camera windows, a brand-new timeline, improved right-click functionality and a bottomless list of improvements best described as “prettier and easier.”
Say hello to Rosie
Please welcome the newest member of the Muvizu family - Rosie! Muvizu:Play launches with a brand new character. We’re looking forward to seeing your Rosie animations.
Content pack: Costumes and clothes
We’ve made a whole suite of character textures that will increase the range and clothing options for your clips. Check them out here.

As ever, we’re hungry for your opinions, feedback and suggestions. We’re also dying to see what you come up with next. Get Muvizu and tell your story!

Warm regards,
The Muvizu team.

New textures coming soon!

Well, have we got exciting news for everyone! We've got a whole bunch of new textures coming soon to a Muvizu near you.

That's right! The art team has been working hard the past couple of weeks and we are very excited to share the great new outfits available very soon for Muvizu characters. There are so many different costume options to choose from - seriously, it's fairly mind boggling (Edit: caveat- we have small minds - they boggle easily). All these new wardrobe choices will make telling a story in Muvizu more exciting - the possibilities are (nearly) endless.

The variety of new textures for Muvizu characters will really expand your options. They are incredibly flexible too and work with an array of genres and themes. The new selection of textures includes nurses (regular or BLOODY!), goths, zombies, cyclists and loads more.

We can't wait to see what everyone will do with them. Keep your peepers popped and look out for announcements on the site, our Twitter feed and our Facebook page.

And the Muvizu Christmas Treasure Hunt winners are...

Hello fellow Muvizuers! Team Muvizu hopes that you all had a fantastic Christmas and New year! We hope 2012 was a good year for everyone but we hope 2013 is even better.

From December 1st to 24th 2012, Muvizu had fans racking their brains trying to solve the Christmas Treasure Hunt. The Treasure Hunt appeared on our homepage as an advent calendar with hotspots made live daily. Some hotspots linked to an animation treat, some linked to Muvizu videos containing hidden clues - clues that formed a code that needed to be cracked.

The code pieced together as the 11 digits of a YouTube URL that sent you to a video which gave you a set of instructions.

Code breakers were instructed to create a cartoon version of themselves inside Muvizu 3D waving and wearing something red. The first person to find all the clues, figure out the code the quickest and follow the instructions won an amazing prize - a desktop animation studio.

We are very proud to announce that Trikolad came first place with the quickest email following all of the rules and winning top prize -

* A top spec Alienware laptop.

* Sony Vegas Pro video editing software

* Olympus SZ-31MR digital camera capable of shooting film in 1080p.

* Blue Microphone Yeti to plug into the laptop capable of recording high quality audio.

* Panasonic RP-HC700 headphones in order to hear said high quality audio.

* A Kindle Fire loaded with animation reference books.

* And more!

We also have 2 runners up who were picked by lucky draw - Fman00 and Zerohero have managed to grab second and third place and have won:

* Sony Movie Studio Platinum video editing software.

* Blue Microphone Yeti to plug into laptop capable of recording high quality audio.

* A Kindle Fire also loaded with animation reference books.

*And more!

To everyone who took part and to our 3 very lucky winners thank you for participating in the Treasure Hunt and especially for being part of the Muvizu community. And thanks for making 2012 a great year for us!

I wonder what creative animating minds have in store for us in 2013.

The Muvizu Team

The Muvizu Christmas Treasure Hunt is upon us

Hello Muvizuers! Have you got your compasses at the ready? We’re challenging everyone to take part in a very unique Christmas competition – the Muvizu Christmas Treasure Hunt. This is a very special treasure hunt which, if you follow all the clues, will lead you to the top prize – a desktop animation studio!

From December 1st until Christmas Eve, the Treasure Hunt video will appear on our homepage. As with an advent calendar, we will be adding a new link, or hotspot, to each door daily. Each link will lead you to some rather lovely content – most of these will be beautiful and sweet animation videos but others will be very special Muvizu clips.

Now pay attention: these Muvizu clips are rather important – in them are hidden clues, ones that will form a code that you will need to crack in order to complete the treasure hunt. The final clue will be revealed on Christmas Eve, so stay sharp, think smart and move quickly.

So what exactly makes up the desktop animation studio? Well, to reward you for your hard work and super intelligence you will receive all the following fancy stuff:

A top-spec Alienware laptop.

Sony Vegas Pro video editing software.

Olympus SZ-31MR digital camera capable of shooting film in 1080p.

Blue Microphone Yeti to plug into the laptop capable of recording high quality audio.

Panasonic RP-HC700 headphones in order to hear said high quality audio.

A Kindle Fire loaded with animation reference books.

And more!

Phew! Isn’t that wild? But that’s not all! If you miss out on the top prize, we’re giving away more stuff. Everyone who completes the treasure hunt but doesn’t get first place will be automatically entered into a draw for second and third place. So what do you get for second and third place? I’m glad you asked! You’ll be getting:

Sony Movie Studio Platinum video editing software

Blue Microphone Yeti to plug into the laptop capable of recording high quality audio.

Panasonic RP-HC700 headphones in order to hear said high quality audio.

A Kindle Fire also loaded with animation reference books

And more!

See? Not too bad, huh? So, all you have to do is think smart, move fast and pay attention for the next 24 days. It’s easy! For more details on exactly how this treasure hunt will work and what you’ll have to do, go to our homepage www.muvizu.com

So remember who loves you (hint: it’s us!) and get ready for the first link on December 1st.

Gather round! There's a new release available now

It's that time again when we release a brand new update to Muvizu and a bunch of new content. There's quite a bit to talk about so I'll just start with the biggest update and move on down. How does that sound?

First off, we're excited to announce that the Muvizu UI is now in German! Hurrah! That's right, we've added a German translation of the UI to the French, Italian and Portuguese versions already available. We hope that this encourages our German-speaking friends to get animating and joining in the fun.

We also have some new toys for everyone to play with in the form of content packs. In a bizarre pairing (I'm reliably informed that there is some method to the madness - Ed), the team has made Trainyard and Prison content packs and they're rather beautiful. Trains and Prisons. Just in time for Christmas! I'm thinking a Muvizu version of the classic Steve Martin & John Candy film, you know the one...

The rather marvellous Dreeko has made some frankly gorgeous pre-lit sets, gathered together in 1 easily downloadable content pack. In simpler terms, Dreeko's taken all the hassle out of getting the lighting just so, in order to make it easier for everyone else to get on with their Muvizu Masterpieces! Or at least, your really funny and often times strange clips.

And finally, we have gone through and fixed many outstanding bugs - things that are far too dull to list just now but nonetheless are quite important and will make Muvizu that much nicer to use.

So what are you waiting for? Head over to the Download page or just click on all the highlighted bits of text in this article and get updating. We are, as ever, looking forward to seeing what insanity you, our users, will wreak.

Regards,

The Muvizu team

Muvizu ASE Exporter for Sketchup

Way back in August 2010 we here at Muvizu introduced an'unofficial feature' to Muvizu that allows you to import ASE model files. What a runaway success this has been! We now have a fairly large collection of 3D models, made by our users, and available for everyone to download and use on our gallery. Our forums are constantly abuzz with request and feedback on these models and one of our users, Dylly, has even started his own site to display his creations. Check them out in all their splendour here.

Most of these models have been made with the free modelling application Sketchup, but many other 3D modelling application can be used with the right kit. However most of them need a plugin or 3rd party piece of kit to go from the native model format to the ASE model format that Muvizu can understand. When it comes to the more serious applications, such as blender, this is all well supported. Sketchup has remained a bit of a grey area.

When we first released this 'feature' the best option was to use an ASE exporter, developed by a chap called HardPCM, which was designed as a generic exporter for the Unreal engine(HSKP2UNR). This works almost perfectly and has been used to export the majority of objects for Muvizu from Sketchup but it does have one drawback. How do you add collision to your model? In the course of testing and using this plugin, it was clear the method of adding collision originally recommended just wasn't up to the task.

http://www.muvizu.com/Video/12851/Importing-from-Sketchup-Part-2-Basic-Collisio

Our users have come up with 2 pretty nifty solutions to this problem. Ziggy72 has made his own match box collision mesh and put it on our forums for everyone to copy and paste into their models, and ukBerty recently did some jiggery pokery with the plugin to automatically include that collision mesh in the outputted ASE file. But, as useful and creative a solution as those are, it still leaves some problems - what if you want a collision mesh that actually lets a character stand on the object?

Well, now it’s plain and simple! We've updated the plugin to allow a custom collision mesh to be created in Sketchup and exported with the model at the same time. All within a nice little drop down user interface :)

Get it here

Here’s a handy little tutorial video to get you started.

Good luck and happy exporting!

Hi everybody! In case you were wondering what happened to us, let me tell you - it's been a busy few months here at HQ. Team Muvizu has been working hard on the latest release of the software to bring you a host of exciting changes. We've got upgrades to both the Muvizu animation engine and the Superheroes and Villains pack. That's right - we've whizzed, whazzed, boomed and kapowed till our fingers bled but it's all worth it for these delightful new toys:

Upgraded Heroes and Villains asset packs

The upgraded H&V asset pack is now available. We enhanced the existing asset pack with brand new animations and a host of beautifully lit and designed pre-made sets and environments including:

Cityscape rooftops

Sewers

Dojos

And creepy, evil caves

Visit our Download or Gallery pages to update the pack that contains the three new characters, hundreds of attachments and special effects http://www.muvizu.com/Download/.

The dev team have been working hard, tinkering under the hood to get Muvizu working that much better. Issues that have plagued users for a while, like memory leak issues, bugs and general performance have now been addressed, fixed and improved.

Ka-pow! Bam! Muvizu's biggest ever update

Today we've released the latest version of Muvizu and poetically labelled it "version 0.21b". It's the biggest ever content update to Muvizu and offers hundreds of cool new things. Let's get started:

Muvizu, Muvizu Lite and content packs

For the discerning or impatient our software is no longer the enormous download it used to be. Muvizu's size has dropped from 800MB to around 450MB. Additionally we're now offering Muvizu Lite as an even smaller prospect. The Lite version contains the full 3D software but allows you to download and install assets as content packs. You can quickly grab the software then pick and choose assets later. This is great if you've got a slow broadband connection.

Heroes and Villains

...and speaking of content packs, our first one is now available. Visit our Download or Gallery pages to grab a pack that contains three brand new characters, hundreds of attachments and several new effects. These guys are also enhanced with several new pieces of 'tech' including the ability to morph their faces, change entire body-parts and apply simulated cloth objects.

Portuguese and Italian
You may now install Portuguese and Italian versions of Muvizu. Great news if you're in Portugal, Brazil, Italy, and, er, São Tomé and Príncipe.

Surveys

Muvizu and its website now have pop-up surveys to help us develop better versions of both. We know these things are a nuisance but they only have few questions and we'd really appreciate it if you could complete them.

So over to you

We can't wait to see what you create with this version of Muvizu. Your animations always surprise and delight us, and your dedication to the project is heart-warming.

You'll find it here: http://www.muvizu.com/Download/

Best regards,

The Muvizu team

Can a 6 year old write a story?

Scholastic, the publisher of kid's books and teaching aids, are running a student writing competition on their site. Besides the whole educational aspect of the competition (it's being run to promote Scholastic's Traits Writing programme which teaches writing from K-8 grade), it is interesting to the likes of digital storytelling software such as ourselves.

One of the aspects of Muvizu that we pride ourselves on is the fact that it's so easy to use, a 6 year old can create a 3D animated video in hours. In fact, we have had an actual 6 year old use it - Scott and his Cops and Robbers clip was created this in a very early version of the software. It's a bit crazy and unusual but there is a story there.

Which brings me back to the original question: can a 6 year old write a complete story? I think so, especially when you see the clip below. Scotty, age 6 and 3 months, wrote the following story for Scholastic which was then animated using his own drawings. It's definitely an interesting story - with a beginning, middle and an end. A hero, a villain and a plot. It's charming, sweet and reminded me of just how fun it is being a kid - something I think a lot of us should remember more often. I really like this project and competition because not only is it encouraging a new generation of storytellers but it allows kids to watch as their imaginations take form in animation. Something a lot of animators, I think, can understand.

Anyway, check out the clip. It made my day.

Kerry Kasim
Marketing

What’s awesome about it though is that it has a “walkthrough” feature where you can actually see the programmer typing out the code and see the intermediate stages ofdevelopment running alongside in real time.

I’m not a web-developer, I know the basics of HTML but feel very out of touch when it comes to cutting edge developments such as HTML5. Spending half an hour watching these (the Snake one is great) and I feel like I could knock up a wee interactive “Google Doodle” or something. Seems to be an incredible way of learning a language for those who are already reasonably competent in other languages or who already know the basics. It’s showing you so much more about the evolving functionality than simply looking at the finished code.

Now I’m not suggesting that I start recording myself writing Muvizu code but I can imagine setting the same thing up for the Unreal Development Kit. Epic have apparently recently introduced some level of play-in-browser/Flash support. With this, and something like The Code Player you could set up a little sandbox level (maybe a simple car on some terrain, or a spaceship and some gun turrets) and create demos to teach people the basics of interactive 3D programming in Unreal. The viewer sees the programmer type some code, hit “compile” and instantly sees the results in the same browser window. It would be much better than the current generation of teaching resources. It would be complicated however by the frequent need to fire up the Unreal Editor when working on UDK projects but if you started out with a defined set of resources, everything else is done in code and it’s not trivial to learn how to write it! Might be a fun project anyway...

David Cumming

Muvizu Team

"Concentrate on story," say the experts, "and write about what you know." Following this advice would lead me to make endless dreary tales about rain, fried food and baldness. Thankfully, others more talented than me have also rejected this advice. So I present to you a selection of animations from people who have rejected the humdrum to tell stories about danger, aliens, killer robots and questionable ethics.

And who all decided to name their creations with the letter "P".

Weird.

"Paranoloand" by Patrick Boivin

"Pixels" by Patrick Jean

"Parkour motion reel" by Suchablog

Finally, some people who not only rejected convention but also the letter "P" http://www.thehydetube.com/

Barry Sheridan
Muvizu team

Back in the 90s, I worked as an artist on 2000AD and Dredd's always been a favourite of mine. I had the pleasure of seeing John Wagner (Dredd's co-creator) give a lecture at Dundee University late last year. He discussed seeing glimpses of the new Dredd film and, although it was being made on a much smaller budget than the 1995 Stallone movie, he thought it was shaping up well. I've noticed that he's now seen the full film and seems delighted:

"I went up to London yesterday to see the completed Dredd film. I've had reservations about certain aspects of it, and made them plain to the team at DNA. All but one of them - a little quibble at the beginning - have been addressed. And what a lot they've added. Music is on the button. SFX are excellent. Filming is impressive. I've not seen a modern 3-D movie before but I like it. I found myself reaching out trying to touch things that were dancing before my eyes. Karl is a great Dredd and Olivia gets Anderson completely. This is Dredd as it should be done - true to character, visceral, unrelentingly violent (but not off-puttingly so). It will open, I believe, sometime in September. No doubt you'll let me know what you think when you've seen it, but this has my recommendation."

Considering he has spent the past 30 years writing most of Dredd's stories and thus defining the character, the above quote is very exciting.

To top it all off, it sports an 18 certificate which says a lot for how hard core a Dredd movie this must be. I'm looking forward to seeing it this September.

Alex Ronald

Senior Artist on Muvizu

Our intrepid team have been working hard and have done a whole lot of fiddling about and tinkering (to use the technical terms) and have improved the following:

Performance issues fixed! This mad band of Muvizu miscreants has been given an early release of our software updates and have been actively trying to break it. And break it they did. There is a semi-open forum thread where they can post issues with the early releases and discuss the new features. Our aim is to work closely with users to ensure that Muvizu runs as well and as hard as they expect. As it is a constant work-in-progress, we appreciate all the feedback we can get. So a big thanks to all our beta testers - who took the time and effort to help us out. As a reward, they now have snazzy badges attached to their profiles so it’s easier to know who the cool kids are.

Plans are also afoot to make our site more interesting, informative and a great place to share and learn. These features, big and small, will be slowly rolled out over the coming months so keep your eyes peeled. As always, we rely on your enthusiasm and interest to make it work so if you’d like to see something, or would like to be part of our efforts just ping me on here and I’ll sort you out.

And finally, we’ve been teasing you about this for months - our Heroes and Villains pack is nearly ready to ship. Team Muvizu have been working hard to make this one of the most impressive asset packs we’ve done to date, and it is nearly time for you all to get your hands on it. But not quite yet. To get your creativity going, here’s a wee teaser clip of what’s coming.

It's extreme

Remember we said last month that we were going to change our release system to allow for a public, stable version of Muvizu for the masses and a closed, extreme version for our growing band of mad moguls? Well, fittingly for today's date, phase one has arrived.

We're releasing Muvizu extreme, in an excitingly toxic form. Bizarrely enough for us, this first, tentative release of what are in effect dev builds, is actually destined to become the first thoroughly public-friendly stable version. Did that make sense? Probably not, but our moguls know what we mean.

They'll be putting through its paces a version which has some fairly radical changes under the hood, but not yet the superheroes asset pack with which we teased you last month.

We said then that this would take a couple of months and we promised to keep you up to speed. That's mainly what this note is about.

So, all you moguls, later today you should be receiving your own private link to your own private hell, sorry, heaven.

A warning to anyone else, though, dev builds are not to be trifled with. They have the potential to trash the drives, data and lives of the inexperienced and unwary. Any wannabe moguls will be rigorously vetted before the admission ceremony, which apparently has a gimp mask, full moon and a baboon in it somewhere.

Finally, a warm welcome to a host of new users who've been posting some amazing content in the past month. One universal vote-winner comes from Rodrisilva with the stunning It can always get worse; terrific use of transparent .avis and some wonderfully inventive Muvizu work.

Best regards,

In the months ahead ...

Since we released our first public alpha of Muvizu in 2009, we've merrily punted out iteration after iteration that lumped bug fixes to the previous release with newly developed features ... which, of course, needed their own fixes. We are now going to do something different.

Muvizu has evolved into such a complex beastie that we haven't a hope in hell of testing it in-house to cover all the punishment meted out to it in the wild by users; not all users, just the usual suspects - and you know who you are.

Flexible though we've tried to make our software, some of you out there are tying it in knots and wringing from it abilities and performances that we'd never envisaged. Furthermore, whereas we run a battery of tests against every release candidate, it's no substitute for using Muvizu creatively and trying, as many of you do, always to push the envelope further.

Given all this, we have decided that we want to make available an official, stable release for newcomers or "gentlefolk" users who make charming little clips, perhaps while sipping tea.

In parallel, we will make available innocent embryonic releases to be tortured mercilessly by our sparrow-mumbling, obviously raving-mad, hard-core users (who are probably PCP- or MDA-fuelled psychos to boot).

Our hope is that by harnessing the worst excesses of this deranged breed we'll be able to fix most bugs before releasing versions to nice people and also bring real-life feedback into the dev process at an earlier stage.

We'll give you a heads-up with respect to the expected timing of releases, stable and dangerous, as soon as we've thrashed out a few more details. In the meantime, though, anyone with a sufficient number of screws loose who'd like to register their interest in playing with fire should leave a comment below. We intend to create a forum area for you, a download section for you and, quite probably, an indemnity/psychiatric release form.

Another big change on the horizon reflects work we've put in steadily over the last year or so to realise an ambition to separate as much as possible the art from the technology in Muvizu.

There are many good reasons for this, the main ones being to reduce the download size of Muvizu software and to decouple the art and dev release cycles. We intend, probably some time in May, to have trimmed Muvizu down to a package containing a few characters with basic objects/environments and then to make available all the other art-side materials in asset packages to download as and when you fancy. This will allow us to publish new art assets without having to re-release the core software.

This is likely to cause some upheaval but, assuming that our pack of wild testers come through for us, we expect to be able to guide all existing users through problems with backwards compatibility, especially with old sets. It is also likely that we'll still provide a full-fat Muvizu version containing absolutely everything, for those who don't mind huge downloads or who are just plain greedy.

This brings us neatly to the mystery image at the top of the page. It's a superhero figure, one of a bunch of characters endowed with special powers who even now are being developed for Muvizu. We intend for these, together with a bunch of evil characters, to form the basis for the first, all-new separately downloadable art asset pack - heroes and villains.

Yes, you'll have to wait a couple of months for this, but we think it'll be worth it.

Best regards,

The Muvizu team.

PS: See you soon ...

Muvizu on your wall

The generous team here at HQ have decided to help Mark Zuckerberg in his quest to raise a few squillion dollars by making it easier for Facebook users to watch Muvizu clips.

Yes, we thought that the fresh-faced philanthropist who has selflessly - and entirely through his own and no one else's genius - allowed advertisers everywhere to share the entire world's personal information, deserved a helping hand. We humbly present the Muvizu Facebook app.

All you need to do to add a touch of animated class to your Facebook presence is go to the Muvizu app's URL - which is this - http://apps.facebook.com/muvizu_app/ - and add it.

The very first time that you use it, you will be asked to give your permission for Muvizu to access your profile and to publish to your wall. The app requires this: if you don't trust us or something and decline, then it won't work so there's no point adding it in the first place.

If you do trust us, but then later on develop a bad case of paranoia and decide that we're responsible for your recent identity theft, including a multi-thousand pound haggis and Irn Bru spree charged to your credit card, it's a simple matter to remove the app.

We'd point out that the need for offline permissions is so that we may publish videos to Facebook users via our content management system.

Anyhow, the upshot of all this is that you'll be able to liven up your wall with Muvizu stuff that you like and animations that you fancy sharing with friends, family ... and advertising agencies.

Go on, you know it makes sense, join our Muvizu for Mark Zuckerberg campaign and make a wee little lad a bit richer.

Best regards,
The Muvizu team
Muvizu now has multiple audio tracks, so say farewell to shuttling frantically between shush and talk.

Another feature worth hitting the sherbet for is the introduction of toon shaders, which give the ability to alter considerably the stylistic look of your Muvizu creations.

Under the hood, we've tweaked the Morpheme system to reflect the very best in contemporary animation blending.

The characters can now be customised with some visual effects and there are some animations to show the effects off nicely.

One little fly in the ointment is the expected implementation of DirectX 11. We ran into some memory overhead problems and a few minor niggles, which we think have now been fixed but which we intend to test further on a variety of hardware.

If all goes well, we expect to release another upgrade, with the DirectX 11 implementation, to you in about a month.

As usual, you should check the known issues list on the download page and, if you run across an interesting bug during your Muvizu work, drop us a line at bugs@muvizu.com or mention it in the forums; talking to other users may well tip you off to some useful workarounds.

Thank you, as always, for your enthusiasm and forbearance; we look forward to seeing what you create with this latest version of Muvizu and its new features.

The obligatory image is a picture that the fair Emily sent us from her holiday in Australia, her thoughts at the time are not known to us. However, let us hope it keeps us shipwreck free!

Best regards,

The Muvizu team

A new look for 2012

Apologies for going dark for a while today, but, as you can see, we needed to take the site offline so that we could publish this new version.

We decided to change things around partly to reflect the style of the Muvizu application user interface, which was refined a while back, but mostly to try to make it easier for us to display choice user content and for users to find the videos that they want to watch.

Our new home page incorporates a video player, preloaded with what we consider to be a worthy example of contemporary user creations, plus some other recent submissions in a scrolling strip beneath that.

Elsewhere, we've ironed out some irritating glitches in using the back button when browsing certain site sections and we've also hooked into YouTube's APIs to bring back the "most viewed" sorting function. This should now reflect the view count as recorded by YouTube.

Part of our plan for 2012 is to involve Muvizu users ever more closely in the project, to which end we've revamped our Mogul section and will expand its range of functions bit by bit throughout the year.

As with all things new, however shiny, we expect to find a few glitches here and there so please drop us a line if you spot anything that's broken, or flag it up in the forums.

Now, while on the subject of broken things, we've discovered that our forthcoming release (which we had hoped to publish today) is stuttering and falling over in Windows XP when more than half-a-dozen or so characters are created. Clearly, this won't do - given that many home users still rely on XP.

We could have put out a version for Vista and Windows 7 users, but this would have been messy (especially given our automatic update checker) and the sensible option is for us to disappoint people again and ask them to bear with us for a few days more. Rather that than give XP users something useless to them. We really are sorry about this. Really.

And ... we're back

Team Muvizu has returned to the mothership to go boldly into a 2012 full of promise, or, at least, expectations. Our release, delayed from last month, is anticipated for January 9.

As the vigilant among you will have noticed in the forums, we announced the winners of our AMD competition, the full details of which may be found here: http://www.muvizu.com/Forum/topic1474-has-he-been-yet-.aspx?Page=1#post8102

Many congratulations to Dylly, Ziggy72 and Hexslayer on their winning entries.

Commiserations, of course, to those who submitted fine videos but who did not win a prize this time around. It was a close call for the top places and we hope only that you'll enter our next competition; we've not yet decided its format, although Bigwally reckons that a ten-second clip - a format considered previously but dismissed as too tricky - may be the way forward.

Please let us know; perhaps a Muvizu elf will start a new forum thread in which to thrash out some ideas.

But competitions may not be the only thing for us to consider this year. We reckon that Muvizu is a powerful creative tool and that with the right publishing and, dare I say it, inducement model, we might usefully explore ways to raise its profile - and with it the work of Muvizu users.

More on this as the rusty cogs of management brains grind slowly into action. Watch out for rumours, hints, proposals and discussions. Don't watch out for teasers, though, because that just isn't our style. As soon as we decide something concrete, we'll tell you about it.

Now to our delayed release. We were to have given you the latest Muvizu update - with its multiple audio tracks, Unreal Engine 3 and morpheme upgrades, toon shaders and a few other bits and bobs - just before Christmas. However, a last-minute bug prompted us to pull the release, which is now slated for January 9 ... if no further nasties raise their ugly heads.

On the subject of ugly, you may be wondering (or worrying) about the picture at the top of this page. This was a Christmas present to the Muvizu boss from our very own Dreeko. We don't know whether it was intended to improve the MD's fashion sense or to brighten the dark winter in Glasgow - for anyone within half a mile of him - but we do know that when he opened the package it rendered him temporarily blind. Apologies, then, for any typos in the above :-)

A very happy new year to everyone. We plan to make 2012 a big one. Let's have some fun.

Best regards,
The Muvizu team.

Judgment daze

Muvizu's competition to win an AMD Fusion-powered laptop closed at midnight with more than 70 entries; that's quite a bit of judging to do - and it may be stressful.

We mentioned when launching the competition that we'd be interested in comments and ratings left for submissions.

Given the substantial number of video shorts to judge - and it would seem that these run the gamut from comedy to politics to the surreal to an old favourite, the fart joke - we'll be looking all the more for public feedback to help our deliberations. So go on: flick through the clips and have your say.

We expect to try to notify the winners on Monday, December 12th, and to announce the results by the end of that week.

As mentioned in a previous bulletin, we (together with the rest of the world) are not hopeful of getting our hands on a Wacom Inkling any time before the New Year.

This being the case, and out of our hands, we'll ask the winner of the third prize how they'd like us to proceed; either opt to wait for an Inkling or go for some other piece of kit of similar value.

Our thanks to all of you who entered this competition, there really are some splendid examples of Muvizu work. We'll update you on any progress but in the meantime, keep making those videos - we love them.

Best regards,

Competition countdown

The deadline for our 30-second clip competition to win an AMD Fusion-powered laptop is fast approaching. There's only a week left to submit your video to be in with a chance of winning.

We're very pleased with the response to our competition, and you may remind yourself of the details here, and have received more than 50 entries so far. The deadline for submissions is midnight on Sunday November 27, so if you've not yet done so there's still time to get a clip or two together.

Just to let you know, we're becoming a little bit anxious with respect to the third prize. We decided, having read favourable reviews, to offer a Wacom Inkling gizmo but are worried at the production delays that seem to be affecting this product.

We've just contacted the folks at Wacom and have been told that someone will get back to us, but to be on the safe side we've decided that should the Inkling not be available by the time we announce the competition winner and runners-up, we'll ask whoever comes second whether they'd like to wait for an Inkling or just choose something else to the same value. We're very flexible here so it's not as though anyone will lose out or anything.

In other news, we're still on course to release an updated version of Muvizu on December 19. This version should add, among other things, multiple audio tracks for character dialogue - more news nearer the date.

Finally, we just have to make mention of a rather special video posted by ukBerty at the weekend. His version of Tim Minchin's White Wine in the Sun is truly sublime and quite the best seasonal creation we've seen anywhere, ever. Many a jaded soul at Muvizu HQ has been moved to teary-eyed wonderment by this extraordinary work.

Learn it in a day and then win a laptop" src="/Images/Documents/muvizu_MPU.JPG" />We're chuffed here at Muvizu HQ to see that our 30-second video competition has already attracted a flurry of entertaining and often amusing clips. Keep 'em coming, folks, there's still a month to go until the deadline.

We've had a couple of queries from people asking whether they are allowed to submit videos animated in Muvizu and then post-processed in a video-editing package.

No problem at all, and the competition details have just been edited to clarify this. Should anyone have any further queries, email competitions@muvizu.com.

So, if you'd like to win an AMD Fusion-powered laptop, or a copy of Sony Vegas Pro video-editing software or even a Wacom Inkling doodles-to-vector gadget, you have until November 27, 2011, to submit your 30-second clip - or as many clips as you like - on any subject or subjects you'd care to choose.

Perhaps some of the early entries will prove inspirational. First off the mark, and followed swiftly by a second entry, was Mysto with his 30-second news offering, displayed left.

No doubt we'll be seeing a few more entries from the Mysto stable before too long.

Among the other entries that we've received so far - and they're all on the site anyway, just look in the gallery for videos that include the words AMD Fusion in the title - we really must highlight an entry from Dylly.

It is a rare delight to see, in this exemplar to our right, someone tread so confidently the fine line between preserving their artistic integrity and shamelessly sucking up to the company that's providing the main competition prize.

Way to go, Dylly! Mind you, the good people of AMD won't actually be doing any of the judging.

We're looking forward to seeing what the rest of you have up your sleeves by way of competition entries. Remember to provide full descriptions for your videos and to tag them accurately and comprehensively in YouTube to improve their chances of being seen.

As mentioned previously, we are likely to be swayed in some small measure by comments posted and the number of views registered against your video submissions.

Moving on from matters to do with the competition, have we mentioned yet that we plan to release another upgrade to Muvizu?

Perhaps it's already been leaked to or rumoured in the forums, but it's probably worth making it official here: we aim to have another release out before Christmas ... in all likelihood not terribly long before Christmas, but a festive treat nonetheless.

One feature likely to be of interest to many of you should be the implementation of multiple audio tracks, so that each character may have, if desired, his or her own dedicated dialogue input.

Finally, and this has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the competition or even the forthcoming release, we saw this clip today and thought that it was worth sharing.

This is a work showing Muvizu characters with live-action actors; well, one actor cloned several times.

We think that this is an accomplished and entertaining piece of filmmaking, and all of us here hope that its maker will pop in to the forums at some point to share tips and tricks.

Best regards,

Win a Fusion-powered laptop

At last! The long-awaited competition to win a next-generation laptop is here. By next-generation, we mean one powered by an accelerated processing unit, or APU, from chip-maker AMD's Fusion range.

As we've said previously, for all the official and technical information about AMD Fusion APUs you should visit AMD's dedicated pages. (Also, the marketing people would like us to point out that AMD Fusion chips are found in machines whose "consumer branding" is AMD VISION. Clear?)

In our strictly unofficial layman's terms, though - because we've been playing with a Fusion-powered laptop, kindly lent by AMD - we can confidently say that the technology rocks. It runs Muvizu beautifully and, as a gaming machine, it is equally impressive.

The machine that AMD is providing as top prize in our competition is this:

HP Pavilion dv7-6165us
AMD Quad-Core A8-3500M with AMD Radeon HD 6755G2 Graphics
17.3inch 6GB RAM 640GB HD Windows 7 Home Premium

More information about this laptop is available here.

Without further ado, then, we invite you to make a Muvizu clip of between 10 and 30 seconds long, on any subject you choose, to enter this competition. Oh, we should mention that second prize is a copy of Sony Vegas Pro 10 video-editing software and third prize is a Wacom Inkling paper-to-vector gizmo.

The closing date for this competition is midnight GMT on November 27, 2011.

What you have to do:

Create a Muvizu video of 10- to 30-second length
Append to the title the words "AMD Fusion"
State in the description "This is an entry for Muvizu's AMD Fusion competition"
Publish it on the Muvizu site
Sit back and cross your fingers - or get busy and create another entry

Naturally, this whole ersatz news page will be reproduced as a sort of permalink competition page here - with the added bonus of legal-sounding jargon, otherwise known as ass-covering. The bottom line (if you'll forgive the pun) is that the competition is a bit of fun and the judges' decision will be final.

Best regards,

A little patch

We mentioned on September 9 that we wanted to publish a patch for Muvizu to fix some annoyances that some users had found with our big release of September 5. We've just published the patch.

We are now fairly confident that sets incorporating animated properties should once more load reliably and that the timeline will once again respond to a right-mouse-button click.

Also, saving sets that include imported objects with ID textures should now retain the texture info.

Elsewhere, the font on menu lists should be slightly more readable, keys have been assigned to zoom functions and a problem with crashes caused when preparing character properties for a character with no attachments should also be fixed.

In short, we've tried to address the main headaches that users spotted a couple of weeks ago. Please let us know how we've done.

As is usual, though, we won't have been able to please everyone. However, and also as usual, we'll try to make excuses for any shortcomings. For instance, we're a very small team here and today's patch has been created without the benefit of our lead developer, Robert, who is in New Zealand for a while because he thinks that he deserves a holiday. He has posted some pictures of this hard-earned jaunt here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcmillan_ra/collections/72157627556486577/

Furthermore, we're currently without our lead artist, Barry. He'd have given anything to be here but is away for a few days because his four-year-old daughter has been a bit poorly.

This is where the picture on this page comes in. The little girl, despite being ill, drew this and sent it to us this morning. I think she may have been worried that we'd sack Barry if Muvizu users complained about things missing from the patch, so she wanted you to have this to show you how sorry she is for keeping her dad away from the important business of responding to your comments.

Anyone want to ruin a little girl's day? ;-)

Best wishes,
