Hello, I've not been here for a couple of years. I made a fabbo animation a couple of years ago and then sold my pc. I now only have a MacBook. I'd like to use Muvizu again so I have two questions - what pc laptop would you suggest I get? I know there are a list of requirements but if anyone could be more specific as to what pc would be good, I'd appreciate it.

And having paid for Muvizu last time round, if I download again onto another pc does my previous payment still count?

Thank you!

Your licence will transfer to any computer but you'll need to contact support if it says you've gone over the limit.
I think you will seriously want to consider a desktop PC. Laptops are massively under-powered for the price and you can barely call the larger ones "portable" (Too large for most bags and battery that lasts 10 minutes). Smaller laptops simply will not be able to cope with Muvizu.
In terms of specs for a desktop PC, you'll probably be looking at an intel i5/i7, at least 8GB of RAM, an SSD (And HDD if you need additional storage), ~500W PSU, any additional peripherals such as a monitor, and a GPU from the list below depending on your budget (Ordered by price) :
  • RX460
  • GTX 1050ti
  • RX470
  • RX480
  • GTX1060
  • GTX1070
  • GTX1080

(Overall price can vary from ~£500-~£1200)

How much are you planning to spend?

Cripes, thanks Mr Dr Who!
Maybe I should think about getting parallels on my mac! Or some mac based animation software.... How I wish Muvizu ran on a mac

Thank you

it may be worth asking what you want to make with Muvizu.

We have people here who are pushing the limits, and for their productions they really NEED a beefy system. But if you are mainly interested in making short presentations without a lot of special effects, you can get by with a more generic computer. But what you don't spend in money, you'll spend in time... because all that beef makes Muvizu run faster.

Since you've already paid for it, you should weigh the cost of another animation package against the cost of another computer. And of course.. today's Black Friday.. the one day of the year when computers are less expensive

"Cyber Monday" is meant to have deals too isn't it? (I'm not sure really, it doesn't seem to be very good over here in the UK)

Thanks Pat
I'm not making massive animations - after I did the last one I vowed I'd never make another one again! It's here https://vimeo.com/100444035 to show the kind of thing I want to make again, or update perhaps 2 years on.

Still, a little encouragement to buy another computer is always very tempting.....

PS, I just watched your video.. you definitely need to get a computer so you can continue the legacy!

I'll defer to the younger folk who are more tech savvy than I.

I don't think that'll be anywhere near powerful enough, but I'll have a look for similarly priced computers which have enough power.

I'm currently looking at individual part costs and the price is higher than I anticipated including the monitor, Operating System, and enough processing power. (Currently ~£850 total as far as I can work out) :/
I'll keep looking for the cheapest option but I think either the prices have gone up in the last few months or I've deluded myself to think the parts are cheaper than they actually are.

Muvizu is based on a Game engine, so a computer that was intended for gaming is going to be your best bet. Unfortunately, hard-core gamers are competitive and they know that having the best gear helps them to win... so as a business demographic, they are unique in their willingness to spend money for high-end capability. That drives up the price for the rest of us..

But if you search for the phrase "gaming computer" you will find some machines in the $400-$500 range that are capable of handling the requirements imposed by your sample video.

Regarding the practice of building a PC with components: That's the best way to get a computer made of all best-in-class components, but I don't think that's what you want.

Key things to look for:
  • at least 8 gigs of ram
  • an intel I5 or I7 CPU (I7 is better if you can find one on sale)
  • and something in the description that says either GTX or RADEON

Depending on your sons' ages, there's a high possibility that they have gaming computers they've outgrown (for gamers, "outgrown" means it's over 6 months old and is therefore not cutting edge any longer). If so, maybe they'd just give it to you, (or sell it for an amount you can both live with) .

Final thought is to find a computer store that is having sales and ask an employee to show you which computers are for gaming. Then, from that group see if any fit your budget.

Good luck shopping, and I hope to see you back on the forum soon posting more videos!

Ok so for a fast gaming-spec PC with the latest generation graphics, the lowest cost for the individual parts seems to be £740.
I'll look for pre-builts with the same specs, but most seem to be from the previous generation which would make the lifespan of the PC shorter.
If you want to go with Pat's advice, avoid anything with the letter m after the name of the graphics (EG: GTX950M) because they're built for laptops and are very under-powered.

Thanks Pat. My kids are way beyond gaming and don't have anything suitable, but thanks for the suggestions and all advice too
